Amoxicillin is safe for pregnant women

Amoxicillin is currently the most widely used antibiotic in the world to treat infections of various localizations. However, the amount of data on the safety of its use in pregnant women is very limited. In this regard, a group of researchers from Denmark conducted a population study to establish a relationship between the use of amoxicillin during pregnancy and indicators such as the body weight of newborn babies born to these mothers, the frequency of premature births, spontaneous miscarriages, birth defects and perinatal level. mortality.

The researchers obtained data for all women who, for the period from 1991 to 2000. gave birth to the first living or dead child with a gestational age of more than 28 weeks. Prescription data for amoxicillin and pregnancy outcomes were obtained from medical records. To assess the effect of amoxicillin on the outcome of pregnancy, a controlled comparative study was conducted in which other related factors were statistically taken into account. The study included 401 firstborns who received amoxicillin during pregnancy. The control group consisted of 10,237 women who for 3 months. before pregnancy and throughout, he took no medication.

The mean body weight of infants of mothers treated with amoxicillin was 57 g greater than that of infants of mothers in the control group. The risk ratio between the control group and the control group was 0.63 for the birth of children with low body weight, 0.77 for the birth of a baby, 1.16 for the birth of children congenital malformations and developmental anomalies and 0.89 for spontaneous miscarriage. No deaths were recorded during the perinatal period.

Thus, the use of amoxicillin during pregnancy does not increase the risk of side effects.
